L6470 OUTPUTS PROTECTION

We have an issue related your stepper motor controller L6470.
We are working with two of your evaluation boards: EVAL6470H-DISC and EVAL6470PD and we had two critical situations with two boards, one of each. In those situations, the controller IC blew up.
The main question is: Should we use some kind of outputs protection like TVS or fast recovery diodes?.
