L9823 as Input?

I am using L9823 in my design to drive the outputs. I also want it to behave as input so that I can connect IO module. How can I use it as input?

On top of what is reported in the DataSheet, what is not clear? Please, could you better specify what is unclear?

As L9823 is an output driver IC, I wanted to use it as input also. I need to connect IO devices in my design on same line. i.e. the user can change the module as per his requirement from Input to output or vice versa. As L9823 is an output driver IC, I don't want to use separate hardware for Input detection in case input module is connected. So I am thinking of using fault detection feature as input. 

Is it a good design to use fault detection feature as input?
